A 4,200-square-foot room outside Modena where fourteen people hand-build roughly 1,200 motorcycle helmets a year. No conveyor, no SKU wall — only autoclaves, leather benches, and a paint booth that smells of cellulose.

The Founders

Two composites engineers who walked out of the big houses.

Selev began as a private argument between two helmet engineers who had spent the previous decade inside other people's laboratories. They wanted to build slow, in small numbers, for riders who noticed.

Spent eight years on the composites team at Bell Helmets in California before returning to Italy. Owns the autoclave program, the cure-cycle library, and the long argument with every resin supplier who tries to sell him something faster than what he already has.

Seven years at Shoei's R&D lab in Japan, then a return to Emilia-Romagna. Runs the interior leather program, the supplier list for every hide, and the trim specifications that ship inside each Vento R and Lupo. The workshop smells like her bench.

The Build

Four stages. Eleven days. Roughly eighty pairs of hands a year touch each shell.

Selev produces at a pace the industry calls inefficient. The team calls it correct. Below is the path a single Vento R shell takes from raw carbon cloth to a finished, certified helmet.

    Autoclave cure

    Carbon fiber shells are laid up by hand and cured in autoclaves using a thermal cycle borrowed from a long-standing supplier relationship with Magnetti Marelli's motorsport division. Roughly 22 hours per shell, monitored in person by one of four composite technicians.

    Leather interior

    Three leather artisans cut, skive, and stitch every interior panel from full-grain Italian hide. The trim geometry is drafted by Elena; the stitching is done at bench speed on restored post-bed machines. The interior is the part of the helmet the rider actually touches.

    Bespoke paint

    Fourteen base shells. 2,400+ verified colour and graphic combinations. A six-week lead time. Selev is the only premium independent offering a full bespoke paint program, and every custom shell still ships with the same 7-year warranty as a stock one.

    Safety inspection

    Two in-house safety engineers run a 41-point inspection on every shell before it ships. ECE 22.06, DOT FMVSS 218, and SHARP 5-star ratings are verified on the Vento R, Strada, and Lupo — the three current models that carry today's certification.

We could double our output tomorrow by hiring twelve more hands and cutting cure times. We won't. The point of this workshop is that someone, somewhere, can name the person who built their helmet.

The Workshop

Fourteen people. Four disciplines. One floor in Modena.

The workshop is not a factory. It is a single open room with high ceilings and a north-facing window wall. Every helmet that leaves it has been handled by at least one person in each of the four disciplines below.

01 4 people

Composite Technicians

Lay up carbon and fiberglass shells, run the autoclave cure cycles, and inspect every shell for voids before it leaves the cure room. Two of the four came from motorsport programmes before joining Selev.

02 3 people

Leather Artisans

Cut, skive, edge-finish, and stitch every interior trim panel. Trained in traditional saddlery; the leatherwork is closer to a Tuscan leather house than to a helmet supply chain.

03 2 people

Safety Engineers

In-house certification, batch testing, and the 41-point inspection on every finished shell. Responsible for keeping ECE 22.06, DOT FMVSS 218, and SHARP documentation current across the active range.

04 5 people

Paint, Paint Prep & Workshop Support

Two painters run the bespoke colour programme; two preppers mask and sand every shell; the workshop lead keeps the bench discipline honest. Marco and Elena count inside this number too.
